Caddo 49 South Coffeyville 0

Top ranked Caddo rolled over South Coffeyville 49-0 in a Class B football first round playoff game tonight in Caddo. Bruin quarterback Dillon Proctor  had a huge game. The senior scored on touchdown runs of 36, 33, and 42 yards. He also threw a pair of touchdown passes… 37 yards to Ty Miller and 15 yards to Rylan Miller.

The unbeaten Bruins led 35-0 after one period ..  The game ended at half time due to the mercy rule. The visiting Lions close the season at 7-4. The Bruins advance to host the winner of tonight’s Fox/Cherokee match up next Friday night in the second round.

Defending state champ Cherokee ended the Bruins season last year holding off Caddo in a 38-32 second round thriller.

Durant 58 Capitol Hill 0

(Oklahoma City) Durant could have named the score in the regular season finale against Capitol Hill at Speegle Stadium. The 58-0 final result could have been a lot worse.  Game officials, understandably, used a running clock for more than half of the game.  Durant (5-5, 4-3) was up 35-0 at intermission and used reserves the entire second half. Easy as it was, the win was needed for DHS to qualify for the playoffs as the fourth team out of 5A-2. The Redskins (1-9, 0-7) close out the district schedule being outscored 401-28.

The only real suspense of the game was ended quickly when Durant junior running back Dakota Diessner topped the 1,000 yard rushing mark for the season.  Diessner ended his short night with 129 yards on eight carries.  He notched touchdown runs of 35,24, and 52 yards. The first TD dash came on the Lions second offensive play of the game. Durant’s opening offensive play also went for six.  Senior quarterback Keaton Webb hit sophomore Zac Cater on a razzle dazzle touchdown strike that covered 51 yards. Jase Hammock’s nine-yard TD run closed out the first half scoring.

DHS  reserves outscored the Redskins 23-0  in the rapidly played second half. Cater scored from six yards out and found Will Engle on a 59-yard touchdown pass. Brandon McDaniel added a 25 yard scoring run and the Lion defense chipped in with a safety. Cole Herron and Zac Taylor were  perfect on eight extra points. Durant out gained “The Hill” 327-17.

A total of 19 players showed up on the Durant defensive  stat sheet with Will Engle recording two solo stops and Andrew Weaver assisting on six tackles. Hammock and Rober Ragle both intercepted Capitol Hill passes.

Durant’s lopsided victory sends the Lions into the post season for the fourth time in five years.

Durant’s first round opponent is unclear at this writing due to  eligibility issues concerning a Guthrie player.  The Lions first round playoff game is scheduled for Friday, November 11, 7:30 pm at either Carl Albert High School in Midwest City or at  Jelsma stadium in Guthrie. There is a chance the game could be postponed if Guthrie decides to file an injunction against the OSSAA who will hear on appeal on the case on Wednesday.

Guthrie post season in peril

a Durant win at hapless Capitol Hill tonight will send the Lions into the playoffs for the fourth time in five years.

But Durant’s first round opponent will probably not be Guthrie as was originally thought. The O-S-S-A-A has told Guthrie to forfeit eight wins and give up its district title because of their use of ineligible player.   Guthrie has signed off on the violation; but, is expected to appeal the punishment next Wednesday.

If the appeal is turned down, (which I would call probable), Durant would travel to Carl Albert in the first round of the playoffs next week.

It was the first playoff game in Durant High school history.
Last year’s game: Durant won 48-14 at Paul Laird Field in Durant

Capitol Hill’s last winning season was in 1989 and 1992 was the last time the Redskins have won more than two games.   Webster started the season with 55 players out for football.  Entering this week he had 22 players. Capitol Hill’s only win this year was 28-12 in week two against another struggling Oklahoma City school district school .US Grant.  The Redskins have been outscored 343-28 in six 5A-2 losses this year.   The top two teams in the district (Lawton Mac and Duncan) scored 67 and 76 points against Capitol Hill.

Bottom Line:
Durant should have no trouble in beating the Redskins and notching the final playoff spot out of 5A-2. A Capitol Hill win would be a colossal stunner. Besides playing for the post season, the Lions will be looking to get Diessner his 1,000 yards rushing. The junior needs 108 yards to achieve that goal. If the score mounts expected…expect the starters to be on the bench by the third quarter…

Durant 36 Northwest Classen 20

(Oklahoma City) Durant took a huge step in locking up a post season berth by defeating Northwest Classen 36-20 during week nine action at Taft Stadium. The Lions trailed the pesky Knights 3-0  before taking the lead for good with 8:47 left in the first quarter on a Keaton Webb to Jase Hammock touchdown pass that covered 44 yards. The two point conversion, out of the swinging gate formation, made it 8-3.  Then, Hunter Stephens recovered an onside kick moments later to give the Lions good field position at the NWC 39.  Four plays later, Webb and Stephens hooked up on a 22-yard scoring toss.  The Lions added another two-point conversion to make it 16-3 with less than half of the first period gone.

Northwest made it interesting for a little while.  The Knights took the ensuing kickoff and marched 62 yards in six plays to score. NWC  QB Christian Gorham hit Corbin Richardson from 27 yards out to cut the DHS lead to 16-10.

But, the Lions would take control in the second period outscoring the Knights 20-0 before intermission. Durant would put together scoring drives of 49, 62, and 33  to push the lead to 36-10.  Webb and Tyler Henley collaborated on a 27 yard touchdown pass and catch and Hammock and Dakota Diessner would tack on touchdown runs of 18 and 5 yards.

Durant would not score in the second half with the Knights adding ten points in the final quarter.

Offensively, Webb threw for 197 yards and three touchdowns with one pick. Hammock caught five balls for 102 yards. Stephens finished with three receptions and Hendley had two grabs.  Dakota Diessner topped the century mark in rushing for the fourth time in 2011 ending up with 112 yards on 22 carries. The junior needs 107 yards to reach 1,000 for the season.

Defensively, Andrew Weaver, Marcus Johnston, Seth Wheeler, and Matthew Shirey led the Lions in tackles.  Shirey recorded his fifth sack of the season and Hammock had an interception.

Durant, 4-5, 3-3, can wrap up the fourth playoff spot from 5A-2 with a  win over  Capitol Hill in week ten. That would send the Lions to Guthrie for a first round playoff match up.   A Lion loss would be a colossal stunner.  The Redskins are 1-8 and have been outscored 343-28 in six district blowouts.  The final regular season game will be played at Speegle Stadium in Oklahoma City.  Kickoff will be  at 7:30 pm, on Friday, November 4.

Northwest Classen Knights (3-5,2-4)     vs. Durant Lions (3-5, 2-4)
Lloyd Smith (first year)                               Byron Cordell (fifth year, 30-31)

The Series: Durant leads 1-0
The Lions won last year’s only meeting between the schools 46-12 at Paul Laird Field. Durant jumped out to a 46-0 lead until the Knights scored two fourth quarter touchdowns.

A once mighty program, Northwest Classen has fallen onto hard times like several of the Oklahoma City school district programs.  The Knights have not recorded a winning season since going 5-4-1…40 years ago in 1971.  In recent years, Northwest has been able to beat fellow O-K-C district schools. Such is the case this year with wins over Northeast, Centennial, and Capitol Hill.

Lloyd Smith, who has been coaching in Texas, has taken over the Knights.  Northwest has been respectable in a couple of district setbacks losing to Altus 20-3 and Chickasha 49-31.

A rarity for struggling programs, the Northwest roster does have several seniors listed.
One of those is Christian Gorham  who returns at quarterback. The 5-8, 165, senior has completed 67-135, 836 yards.  He has passed for four scores and rushed for three touchdowns.  Last season vs. Durant he completed only 7-22  passes.  But, one of those went for 73 yards to Terry Arnold

His favorite receivers are Marvin Kerbo, senior co-captain, Sophomore Jordan Webster, and Corbin Richardson 5-10, 145, Jr.

Rushing has been nearly non-existent with the Knights averaging less than a yard a carry.  However, last week against Capitol Hill Freshman T- Vick rushed six times for 144 yards and three touchdowns and Lorenzo Alexander, 5-7, 170 Jr, added 72 yards and a couple of scores. Isaiah Beverly, a junior fullback has had some success.

Defensively, the leading tacklers are defensive end and senior co-captain Codie Nolan and junior Linebacker Terrance Bias. Webster is the leading tackler out of the secondary.

(68) Cord Zalenski, 5-11, 260 senior , 2 ½ sacks,
(54) Matthew Shirey, 6-1, 225, Sr. 4 sacks leads team

Bottom Line:
Northwest Classen is improved; But, still shouldn’t beat Durant.  The Lions can’t overlook the Knights and should not since a playoff spot hinges on DHS winning the next two weeks. It probably won’t be a name the score game like next week against Capitol Hill. However, unless Durant turns the ball over, it should be a comfortable win.

Lawton MacArthur 49 Durant 14

5A second-ranked Lawton MacArthur got three touchdowns from T-J Turner and sped past Durant 49-14 in week eight action at Paul Laird Field in Durant. Turner scored on a 35 yard run and caught a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Taylor Chasteen who burned the Lions secondary for 239 yards completing 11 of 15 passes.  Four of those completions went for touchdowns. The Highlanders (5-0, 8-0) led 36-0 at halftime of senior night and turned the game over to reserves after building a 49-0 lead midway in the third quarter.

Durant scored twice in the final period.  Dakota Diessner scored from 41 yards out and Tyler Hendley caught a 14 yard scoring toss from quarterback Keaton Webb. Diessner finished the night with 109 yards on 20 carries. Linebacker Andrew Weaver led the Lions defense and Matthew Shirey turned in a solid game blocking a Highlander punt.

Despite the loss, Durant (2-3, 3-5) remains in a good position to gain the fourth playoff spot out of 5A-2.  In week nine, the Lions travel to Oklahoma City to meet Northwest Classen at historic Taft Stadium.  DHS head coach Byron Cordell calls the Knights  ”much improved”.  Northwest is 3-5 with all of the wins coming over Oklahoma City public school opponents. NWC defeated the Lions week ten foe  Capitol Hill, 53-3,  for its lone district win.  Once a storied program, the Knights haven’t recorded a winning season since going 5-4-1 in 1971.
The game will kickoff at 7:30 pm, November, 28, in Oklahoma City.

Lawton MacArthur (7-0, 4-0, 5A-2)

Brett Manning,

Series: Lawton MacArthur leads the series 3-1

1972: Lawton Mac 26-25

1973: Lawton Mac 20-6

1984: Durant 14-7 in second round of playoffs.

2010: Lawton Mac 42-20 at Cameron Stadium in Lawton.  The Highlanders put 35 points on the board in the second quarter enroute to a 42-20 win over the Lions.  Lawton Mac rolled up 448 yards in total offense.

The Highlanders were expected to be one of the top teams in the state this season and they have not disappointed. A 10-3, state semifinal club in 2010, Mac enters week eight rated second in the state in class 5A in both the coachesaid and Oklahoman polls and fourth by the Tulsa World. They were the pre season pick by the coaches to win 5A-2.

The Highlanders have blown past district competition winning by an average score of 42-6.  What is scary comes from the fact that MacArthur has yet to play Capitol Hill and Northwest.  So, after Durant, the Highlanders will have finished the toughest part of their district schedule.

Offensively, Mac is loaded with weapons.  Quarterback Taylor Chasteen, 6-0, 170 senior is super efficient at quarterback throwing for 1677 yards and 19 scores. He played sparingly in last years game completing 3-3 as a back up. Darius Graham, a 6-1, 220, junior running back entered last weeks win over Duncan with 669 yards and six touchdowns and had averaged nearly six yards a carry. Graham ran for more than a thousand yards as a sophomore and rushed for 96 yards and scored three touchdowns in the Highlanders victory over Durant last season. The leading pass catcher is T-J Turner a 5-9, 158, senior

Last week in Mac’s critical 28-7 win over Duncan, the Highlander defense held the Demons to just 130 yards in total offense. Top personnel include cornerback Michael Thomas, a 6-3, 215 senior who was a top 30 Oklahoma preseason prospect. Thomas has already committed to Tulsa. Linebacker Austin Payne, 5-11, 225, senior is the leading tackler and ringleader. Dewayne Sanford, 6-2, 186, senior tackle Braylon Freeman, 5-11, 273, senior with six sacks and defensive back, Jacob Warner ,6-1, 175 junior are other top defensive players.

The Lions were picked to finish in a tie for third by the coaches in the pre season 5A-2 poll. Courtesy of last week’s 35-16 victory over Altus, the Lions are in the driver’s seat for the fourth spot in the district. Durant enters the week tied with Chickasha and Altus for the final playoff spot. The Lions have the tie breaker on both those teams and an easier remaining schedule.  After tonight, Durant closes the season with very winnable games in Oklahoma City against Northwest Classen and Capitol Hill.

Last week’s victory over Altus was big for a couple of reasons.  First it set the Lions up for another playoff spot…and second it marked the return of Keaton Webb.  The senior quarterback defied the odds and returned after it was believed he would miss the entire season with a disc problem.

After rotating with Zac Cater in the first half, Webb took over in the second half and responded by hitting 11-13 passes for 166 yards and two scores.  He also ran for another. One of Webb’s scoring throws covered 59 yards to junior Hunter Stephens who had 3 catches for 76 yards. The Lions revamped offensive line gave junior running back Dakota Diessner space to finish with 129 yards and two touchdowns.  Diessner has rushed for 674 yards this season and has scored 12 times.

Defensively, Senior Matthew Shirey led the team in tackles and recorded a sack.  Marcus Johnston also played well and with heart despite a death in his family during the week.

The Bottom Line:

Lawton MacArthur appears to be a juggernaut. The Lions will need to control the ball, force turnovers, and stay away from injuries to have a chance at the upset.  The Highlanders passing attack is potent and Durant’s defense has been prone to give up the big pass play. The Mac defense has been solid with most of the points given up to 6A and Texas opponents.

Even a Durant upset wouldn’t really help them move up in the district standings with Ardmore and Duncan both holding the tiebreaker over the Lions. It would most likely assure Durant of the fourth spot no matter what Altus and Chickasha do over the final three weeks. Pride will be the issue for both teams.  Mac will be trying to keep its unbeaten season and Durant wants to make a solid showing in its senior night home finale. A Lions upset win will be a tall order, indeed.

Durant 35 Altus 16

Durant stopped a two-game losing streak by defeating Altus 35-16 in week seven action at Paul Laird Field. The Lions welcomed back senior quarterback Keaton Webb who had missed the first six games due to a disc injury. Webb didn’t appear rusty completing 11-13 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored on a quarterback sneak.

Durant  (3-4, 2-2)  took a 7-0 first quarter lead on a 23 yard TD run by Dakota Diessner. But, the Bulldogs (3-4, 2-2) countered with a ten point run to lead 10-7 with 5:22 left before halftime . Durant answered the challenge with an impressive 80 yard scoring drive in seven plays.  Diessner’s 26 yard dash to the endzone sent the Lions ahead for good with 2:07 left in the second quarter.

Up 14-10, Durant’s special teams came up with a big play to open the second half. Cole Herron’s short kickoff was recovered by Hunter Stephens at the AHS 27. Eight tough plays and some four minutes later Webb’s one yard plunge boosted the Lions lead to 21-10.

Durant would take control after that increasing its lead to 35-10 by adding  a 59-yard Webb to Stephens touchdown pass and catch and  a third Diessner TD scamper. The Bulldogs closed out the scoring with a late fourth quarter touchdown. The Lions would pile up 337 yards in total offense. Diessner ran 18 times for 129 yards and three touchdowns. Stephens continued to emerge at receiver with three receptions including the exciting long-distance hitch and go homerun ball.

Defensively, the Lions got a solid effort.  Matthew Shirey led the team in tackles and recorded a sack.  Marcus Johnston, Gabriel Louis, Diessner, and Cordell Zalenski also showed up well on the stat sheet.  Diessner and Andrew Weaver both intercepted Bulldog passes.

After the game Durant head coach Bryon Cordell said his team “went back to the basics” as they prepared for the key 5A-2 district showdown with the Bulldogs. “We had our best week of practice all year and maybe our best week of practice in a couple of years and it showed. We preached ‘you play like you practice’ and it carried over. The team showed a lot of heart and they played hard and that is what I was really proud of.”

The Durant win gives the Lions the inside track on the fourth playoff spot out of 5A-2. The Lions now own the  head to head tiebreaker over both Altus and Chickasha with three weeks left in the regular season. The Lions will host top five Lawton MacArthur Thursday, October 20, 2011 at Paul Laird Field in the final home game of the regular season. Kickoff will be 7:30.
