(Oklahoma City) Durant took a huge step in locking up a post season berth by defeating Northwest Classen 36-20 during week nine action at Taft Stadium. The Lions trailed the pesky Knights 3-0 before taking the lead for good with 8:47 left in the first quarter on a Keaton Webb to Jase Hammock touchdown pass that covered 44 yards. The two point conversion, out of the swinging gate formation, made it 8-3. Then, Hunter Stephens recovered an onside kick moments later to give the Lions good field position at the NWC 39. Four plays later, Webb and Stephens hooked up on a 22-yard scoring toss. The Lions added another two-point conversion to make it 16-3 with less than half of the first period gone.
Northwest made it interesting for a little while. The Knights took the ensuing kickoff and marched 62 yards in six plays to score. NWC QB Christian Gorham hit Corbin Richardson from 27 yards out to cut the DHS lead to 16-10.
But, the Lions would take control in the second period outscoring the Knights 20-0 before intermission. Durant would put together scoring drives of 49, 62, and 33 to push the lead to 36-10. Webb and Tyler Henley collaborated on a 27 yard touchdown pass and catch and Hammock and Dakota Diessner would tack on touchdown runs of 18 and 5 yards.
Durant would not score in the second half with the Knights adding ten points in the final quarter.
Offensively, Webb threw for 197 yards and three touchdowns with one pick. Hammock caught five balls for 102 yards. Stephens finished with three receptions and Hendley had two grabs. Dakota Diessner topped the century mark in rushing for the fourth time in 2011 ending up with 112 yards on 22 carries. The junior needs 107 yards to reach 1,000 for the season.
Defensively, Andrew Weaver, Marcus Johnston, Seth Wheeler, and Matthew Shirey led the Lions in tackles. Shirey recorded his fifth sack of the season and Hammock had an interception.
Durant, 4-5, 3-3, can wrap up the fourth playoff spot from 5A-2 with a win over Capitol Hill in week ten. That would send the Lions to Guthrie for a first round playoff match up. A Lion loss would be a colossal stunner. The Redskins are 1-8 and have been outscored 343-28 in six district blowouts. The final regular season game will be played at Speegle Stadium in Oklahoma City. Kickoff will be at 7:30 pm, on Friday, November 4.
